Indian Couple Spends Rs 15 Lakh to Reunite with Pet Dog in Australia
Hyderabad pair treats beloved dog Sky as family, completes complex relocation journey.
A couple from Hyderabad has captured hearts online after spending nearly Rs 15 lakh to relocate their pet dog Sky to Australia rather than leave him behind or adopt a new pet. Divya and John shared their touching story through an Instagram account called ‘Kahaani of Tales,’ detailing the emotional and financial challenges they overcame to keep their family intact.
Australia classifies India as a non-approved country for direct pet imports due to rabies concerns, requiring dogs to spend six months in a rabies-free country before entering. This mandatory quarantine, combined with veterinary requirements, paperwork, vaccinations, microchipping, and boarding fees, pushed the total cost to between Rs 14–16 lakh. The couple described the news as overwhelming but never considered abandoning Sky, whom they consider their child.
To ease the transition, Divya and John first stayed with Sky in Dubai for a month, helping him adjust to a new environment before placing him in a professional boarding facility for the remaining quarantine period. The full process spanned around 190 days filled with daily check-ins, video calls, endless questions to caretakers, and constant worry. Leaving him after the initial month ranked among the hardest moments of their lives.

After months of waiting, stress, and separation, Sky finally arrived in Australia. The couple shared that every sacrifice suddenly felt worthwhile the moment they reunited. “This journey might sound unreasonable to some people, but for us, it never was. Sky isn’t ‘just a dog.’ He is our child, and we would do it all over again for him,” they wrote in the heartfelt video.
Their story has resonated widely, highlighting the deep bond many pet owners share and the lengths people will go to for their furry family members. It also sheds light on the strict yet important biosecurity rules that countries like Australia enforce to protect native wildlife and public health.
The couple’s dedication serves as an inspiring reminder that for many, pets are irreplaceable members of the family, deserving every effort to stay together through life’s big moves.
