Chennai Bans Pitbull and Rottweiler Ownership Starting Tomorrow
Greater Chennai Corporation bans purchase and rearing of Pitbull and Rottweiler dogs with heavy fines.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has passed a landmark resolution banning the purchase and rearing of Pitbull and Rottweiler dogs within city limits, citing public safety concerns. The new regulations will take effect from Saturday, December 20. The decision was adopted unanimously during a council meeting at the Ripon Building, chaired by Mayor R. Priya.
Under the resolution, any individual found purchasing or rearing these breeds after the ban will face a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The civic body emphasized that the measure aims to curb incidents of dog attacks, which have reportedly increased in recent months. Officials stressed that the move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen pet safety regulations in the city.
Existing owners of licensed Pitbulls and Rottweilers are required to ensure that their pets are always fitted with a collar and muzzle when taken outdoors. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a fine of Rs 5,000, the Corporation warned. The new rules highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership and public safety.

The council also reviewed the status of pet licensing, noting that while 98,523 pets have been registered in Chennai, only 56,378 licenses have been issued so far. Civic officials had set December 19 as the deadline for pet licensing, and from December 20, door-to-door inspections will begin to ensure compliance.
Officials warned that unlicensed pet owners may face fines of up to Rs 5,000. They also stated that enforcement efforts would be intensified to ensure adherence to vaccination, licensing, and safety measures for all pets across the city.
The Greater Chennai Corporation reiterated that these measures aim to promote responsible pet ownership while safeguarding public safety. Civic authorities urged residents to comply with the new rules to avoid penalties and help reduce the risk of dog-related incidents in the city.
