Struggling In Heat? Experts Explain Whether Cucumber Or Watermelon Helps More

With rising temperatures across India and parts of the world, concerns around heat stress have intensified, prompting renewed attention on natural cooling foods such as cucumber and watermelon. Nutrition experts and research studies suggest that both foods play a significant role in regulating body temperature and preventing dehydration during extreme heat conditions.

Nutritionist Lovneet Batra explains that heat stress can affect the body’s ability to maintain its core temperature, especially when external temperatures rise sharply. Symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and excessive sweating are commonly associated with overheating. In such conditions, hydration-focused foods become essential to support the body’s cooling mechanisms.

Cucumber is widely recognised for its high water content, which is approximately 95 percent, making it one of the most hydrating vegetables available. It also contains potassium and antioxidants that help reduce internal heat and support digestion. Experts note that its light and easy-to-digest nature makes it suitable for sustained cooling, particularly during prolonged exposure to hot environments.

Watermelon, on the other hand, contains around 90 to 92 percent water and provides a quick hydration boost due to its natural sugars and electrolytes. It is also rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress in the body. Nutrition specialists point out that watermelon can help restore energy levels quickly, making it useful during periods of intense heat exposure.

Comparing the two, experts highlight that cucumber offers steady and prolonged cooling with minimal calories, while watermelon delivers faster hydration but should be consumed in controlled portions due to its sugar content. Both foods contribute effectively to managing heat stress, and their benefits vary depending on individual dietary needs and sensitivity.

Health professionals advise that cucumbers can be consumed regularly in salads or infused water, while watermelon is best taken as a midday snack for hydration. However, caution is advised for individuals with diabetes or kidney-related conditions, who should monitor portion sizes due to sugar and potassium levels. Overall, combining both foods as part of a balanced summer diet can help improve hydration and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
