From Heat to Healthy: Sabja Seeds Are India’s Tiny Metabolic Powerhouse

As summer temperatures soar, wellness experts are highlighting simple, traditional ingredients that can support metabolism, digestion, and overall health. Luke Coutinho, an integrative lifestyle coach, recently drew attention to sabja seeds, also known as sweet basil seeds, which have long been used in Indian diets to beat the heat and support metabolic health.
Coutinho explained that sabja seeds were traditionally soaked in water during summers to cool the body, sustain energy, and aid digestion. “Indians have been using this tiny seed for centuries to survive brutal summers, and science finally explains why it’s also a powerful metabolic superfood,” he said in an Instagram post.
When soaked, sabja seeds swell and form a gel-like coating called mucilage. Rich in soluble fibre, this layer slows digestion, reduces post-meal glucose spikes, improves hydration, and increases satiety. Coutinho likened the effect to chia seeds, noting that the gel can slow carbohydrate absorption and support blood sugar balance.

Beyond blood sugar control, the seeds act as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria and promoting digestive health. Traditionally, they have been used to relieve constipation, acidity, and gut irritation while supporting hydration and appetite regulation. The fibre content also aids in weight management by expanding in the stomach and promoting a feeling of fullness.
Nutritionally, one tablespoon of sabja seeds provides 6–7 grams of fibre, 2–3 grams of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, iron, and polyphenols. Coutinho recommends soaking one teaspoon to one tablespoon of seeds in 200–250 ml of water for 15–20 minutes before consuming. The soaked seeds can be added to water, coconut water, buttermilk, or smoothies for a refreshing and healthful summer drink.
With their cooling, hydrating, and metabolism-supporting properties, sabja seeds offer a simple, natural way to stay healthy during the summer months, while also drawing on centuries-old Indian dietary traditions.
