Char Dham Yatra Report: 72% of Annual Pilgrims Crowd First 60 Days, Ecology at Risk
A new report warns Char Dham's early-season pilgrim rush strains Himalayan ecology and infrastructure.
A recent analysis of the Char Dham Yatra has raised serious concerns over environmental stress and infrastructure strain, revealing that nearly 72% of pilgrims visited during the first two months of the 2025 season.
The report, titled “Pathways to Pilgrimage: Data Insights, Challenges and Opportunities", was released by the Social Development for Communities Foundation and highlights a sharp imbalance in visitor distribution. Out of over 51 lakh pilgrims recorded across a 210-day period, a significant majority arrived within the first 60 days, placing intense pressure on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
According to the findings, 34% of pilgrims undertook the yatra in the first 30 days, followed by another 38% in the next month. The peak rush was observed in the second week of June, when around 5.47 lakh pilgrims visited within just seven days. In contrast, weather disruptions and the monsoon resulted in 86 days across the pilgrimage season recording zero footfall.

The report also pointed to uneven activity across key shrines, noting 38 zero-footfall days at Yamunotri and 35 at Gangotri. This skewed pattern, experts warn, not only increases safety risks during peak periods but also leaves infrastructure underutilised during off-peak phases.
Concerns were further raised over helicopter operations on the Kedarnath route, where five aviation-related incidents were reported within six weeks, including two fatal accidents that claimed around 13 lives. One such incident near Gaurikund was flagged as a sign of deeper systemic issues.
SDC Foundation founder Anoop Nautiyal urged authorities to shift focus from record-breaking numbers to sustainable management, stressing the need for better crowd distribution, improved safety mechanisms, and ecological protection to ensure the long-term viability of the pilgrimage circuit.
