India Responds To Pakistan's J&K Remark At UN, Flags 'Huge Responsibility' Warning

India firmly rebukes Pakistan's Jammu and Kashmir remarks at the United Nations.

India strongly objected to Pakistan’s references to Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly session on Friday, with New Delhi reiterating that the region is an integral and inalienable part of India and cautioning Islamabad against using international platforms to advance “false and biased narratives.”

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P Harish, responded to remarks made by Pakistan’s envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad during a discussion on the Council’s Annual Report to the General Assembly. Harish said that all matters relating to Jammu and Kashmir are strictly internal to India and asserted that the Union Territory “is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.”

He further stated that any claims to the contrary were baseless and inconsistent with historical facts, adding that “empty rhetoric and hollow claims” would not alter what he described as a settled reality. Harish also warned Pakistan against misusing UN platforms for what he called divisive political messaging, noting that such conduct undermines the credibility of multilateral forums.

Referring to Pakistan’s conduct as a member of the international body, Harish said Islamabad carries a “huge responsibility” as a participant in the UN system and should act in accordance with the principles of the organisation rather than advancing bilateral political disputes in global forums. His remarks came in direct response to Pakistan’s references to Jammu and Kashmir during the session.

Separately, India’s Ministry of External Affairs lodged a strong protest over Pakistan’s announcement of plans to hold general elections on June 7 for the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan assembly. The MEA reiterated that the region is Indian territory under illegal and forcible occupation by Pakistan, and stated that such actions cannot alter its legal status.

The ministry further said that attempts to bring administrative changes in the region are aimed at masking what it described as serious issues, including human rights violations, political repression, economic exploitation, and denial of fundamental freedoms in areas under Pakistan’s control. It added that Pakistan must vacate territories it holds illegally and rejected any effort to legitimise its presence through political or administrative measures.

India’s response at the UN and through diplomatic channels underscores the continued sensitivity surrounding Jammu and Kashmir in international discourse, with both countries maintaining sharply opposed positions on the status of the region.
