Doctors Clarify Effects Of Excessive Milk Intake On Bone Health

Doctors address myths about excessive milk intake and bone health.

Concerns about whether excessive milk consumption can weaken bones have resurfaced online, prompting medical experts to clarify long-standing misconceptions. Orthopaedic specialists have emphasised that milk remains a valuable source of essential nutrients for bone health, and there is no scientific evidence linking moderate or high milk intake to osteoporosis.

The discussion has largely been fuelled by the “acid-ash hypothesis,” a theory suggesting that high consumption of dairy and meat may increase body acidity and cause calcium loss from bones. However, doctors have firmly rejected this claim. Senior orthopaedic consultant Dr Vaibhav Kasodekar from SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim said research does not support the idea that dietary protein or dairy intake harms bone strength. Instead, he noted that protein combined with adequate calcium actually supports bone development and helps reduce fracture risk in ageing individuals.

Experts also highlighted that osteoporosis is a complex condition influenced by multiple factors rather than diet alone. These include ageing, hormonal changes, vitamin D deficiency, lack of physical activity, smoking, and poor nutrition. Dr Kasodekar stressed that calcium intake must be viewed alongside other lifestyle factors, while another orthopaedic consultant, Dr Nikhil Jadhav from Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Pune, added that scientific studies show either a neutral or positive relationship between dairy consumption and bone mineral density.

Doctors further explained that milk provides key nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, protein, and vitamin D (when fortified), all of which play an important role in building and maintaining bone strength. Regular consumption during childhood and adulthood helps in achieving optimal bone mass, which reduces the risk of fractures later in life. However, they cautioned that excessive reliance on milk alone without dietary balance can lead to nutritional imbalances.

While milk is generally beneficial, experts warned that overconsumption may still cause issues such as digestive discomfort, excess calorie intake, and reduced dietary diversity. They advised that bone health depends on a combination of proper nutrition, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle habits rather than any single food item. For individuals who are lactose intolerant, alternatives such as fortified plant-based milks, ragi, tofu, and green leafy vegetables were recommended.

In conclusion, doctors reiterated that milk should be seen as part of a balanced diet rather than a standalone solution or threat. When consumed in moderation and combined with a healthy lifestyle, it contributes positively to bone strength and overall skeletal health, without increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
