Minoxidil in Mothers Triggers Excessive Hair Growth in Babies, Study Finds

Maternal minoxidil use linked to abnormal hair growth in infants, reveals AIIMS global analysis.

Mothers using minoxidil, a popular hair loss treatment, may inadvertently expose their infants to health risks, including infantile hypertrichosis, a condition causing abnormal hair growth on unusual parts of the body. This finding comes from a global analysis conducted by researchers from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and AIIMS, New Delhi.

The study analysed 2,664 global cases of suspected minoxidil-related infantile hypertrichosis, of which 45 cases involved children aged 0–23 months. Among these, 22.2% were linked to maternal exposure, 44.4% to accidental exposure, and 33.3% to unknown causes, highlighting the potential risks for infants exposed to the drug.

In addition to hair growth abnormalities, minoxidil use has been associated with eye-related disorders. Globally, 1,669 cases reported vision issues, including eyelid swelling, blurred vision, and central serous chorioretinopathy, which can lead to fluid buildup under the retina. India accounted for 25 of these cases.

Originally developed to treat hypertension, minoxidil was later repurposed for baldness due to its hair growth-promoting side effect. Despite proven benefits, its over-the-counter availability and lack of strict regulation have raised safety concerns, particularly for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

The researchers emphasised that minoxidil is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation, yet instances of maternal exposure continue to occur. The study underscores the importance of raising awareness about accidental or early-life exposure risks, including potential eye and hair growth disorders.

Data for the study were collected from the VigiBase dataset up to March 2025, providing a comprehensive overview of global trends and highlighting the need for stricter guidelines and public education on minoxidil use among vulnerable populations.
