Can Rice Be Part Of A Weight Loss Diet? Here's What Experts Say

Experts explain rice's role in weight management.

Rice is a staple food for millions of Indians, but it is often one of the first foods people remove from their diet when trying to lose weight. However, nutrition experts suggest that eating rice every day does not automatically lead to weight gain. Weight management depends on overall calorie intake, portion size, physical activity levels and the nutritional balance of the entire diet rather than eliminating a single food item.

Rice is a carbohydrate-rich food that provides energy, but the issue usually lies in excessive consumption rather than rice itself. White rice, which is commonly eaten in Indian households, contains around 130 calories per 100 grams when cooked. When consumed in large quantities without enough protein, fibre or vegetables, it can contribute to excess calorie intake and make weight loss more difficult.

People can include rice in a weight-loss diet by maintaining a calorie deficit and following balanced meal patterns. Experts recommend controlling portion sizes and pairing rice with protein-rich foods and vegetables. A healthy plate method suggests filling half the plate with vegetables, one-quarter with protein sources and one-quarter with rice. Rice can be combined with foods such as dal, rajma, chana, fish, eggs, paneer or chicken to create a more balanced meal.

The amount of rice suitable for weight loss varies depending on individual calorie needs, age, body weight and activity levels. A moderate serving of around half to one cup of cooked rice can fit into a weight-loss plan for many people when combined with nutritious foods. However, frequent second servings, eating rice with fried foods, low protein intake and consuming sugary drinks along with meals can slow progress.

Choosing the right type of rice and preparation method can also support healthier eating habits. Varieties such as hand-pounded rice, fermented rice and parboiled rice may offer additional nutritional benefits, while brown, red and black rice can be included depending on individual digestion and preferences. The most suitable choice is the one that fits a person's nutritional needs and lifestyle.

A practical Indian weight-loss meal plan can include rice along with other healthy foods. For example, breakfast may include vegetable poha with boiled eggs, lunch can consist of rice with dal, vegetables and salad, snacks can include fruits and nuts, and dinner can include grilled paneer or fish with vegetables and a small portion of rice. Experts emphasise that sustainable weight loss comes from balanced eating, regular physical activity and maintaining healthy habits rather than completely avoiding rice.
