Can A Mosquito Bite Really Cause Brain Inflammation? Expert Explains

Expert explains mosquito-borne viruses linked to brain inflammation.

A mosquito bite usually causes only mild itching or irritation, but in rare cases it can transmit viruses that lead to encephalitis, a serious inflammation of the brain. Health experts have cautioned that the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses increases during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, making preventive measures and early recognition of symptoms especially important.

Doctors explain that a mosquito bite does not directly cause brain inflammation. Instead, infected mosquitoes can transmit viruses into the bloodstream while feeding. In a small number of cases, these viruses may reach the central nervous system and trigger inflammation of the brain. Viruses linked to mosquito-borne encephalitis include the Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus, Murray Valley encephalitis virus and Eastern equine encephalitis virus. In India, Japanese encephalitis remains one of the leading mosquito-borne causes of brain inflammation.

Early symptoms often resemble those of a common viral illness and may include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea and vomiting. However, the condition can become severe if the infection spreads to the brain. Warning signs such as a persistent high fever, severe headache, confusion, excessive drowsiness, seizures, difficulty speaking, weakness in the limbs, stiff neck or loss of consciousness require immediate medical attention, as encephalitis is considered a medical emergency.

People at higher risk of developing severe illness include young children, adults over the age of 60, individuals with weakened immune systems and those with chronic medical conditions. Doctors diagnose encephalitis through a combination of blood tests, brain imaging such as MRI or CT scans, spinal fluid analysis and specialised laboratory tests to identify the virus responsible. While there is no specific cure for many mosquito-borne viral infections, treatment focuses on supportive care, including hospitalisation, hydration, fever control and management of complications.

Health experts emphasise that prevention remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. They recommend wearing full-sleeved clothing, using mosquito repellents, sleeping under mosquito nets where necessary, installing window screens and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. In regions where Japanese encephalitis is common, vaccination may also be advised for eligible individuals. Early diagnosis and timely medical care can significantly improve outcomes and help prevent life-threatening complications.
