Gurudongmar Lake Route Reopens in Sikkim Nine Months After Landslide Disaster

The Lachen route in North Sikkim reopens for tourists after new bridge construction was completed last week.

The gateway to the high-altitude Gurudongmar Lake has reopened for vehicular traffic after being closed since June 2024 due to heavy rains and landslides. The reopening comes after the construction of a new 400-foot bridge along the stretch, officials said.

The June 2025 disaster had caused widespread damage to roads and bridges across North Sikkim, disrupting access to several key tourist destinations. Gurudongmar Lake, located at approximately 17,000 feet, is one of the highest lakes in India and a major draw for visitors to the region.

North Sikkim District Magistrate Anant Jain said that the final bridge on the route from Chungthang to Lachen was inaugurated last week, after which vehicular movement resumed. He issued an advisory for drivers, noting that only one vehicle should cross the bridge at a time due to width limitations and that load capacity limits must be strictly followed. Adequate time gaps between vehicles are also recommended for safety.

The advisory has been communicated to the Tourism Department, checkposts, and other relevant authorities. About 90% of tourist permits are issued online via the Third Mile office, which has been updated to facilitate the new flow of visitors. Jain added that there are currently no restrictions on tourist movement, with the road from Chungthang to Lachen and Lachung now open and in good condition.
