Your Tongue May Signal Health Problems: Doctor Shares Five Warning Changes

Tongue changes may reveal health issues

The tongue can provide important clues about a person’s overall health, with changes in its colour, texture, or appearance sometimes indicating underlying issues, according to orthodontist Dr Jaineel Parekh. While oral care is often associated with brushing and maintaining healthy teeth, experts say paying attention to the tongue is equally important as it can reflect nutritional deficiencies, infections, dehydration, and other health concerns. Dr Parekh explained that dentists routinely examine the tongue during oral health check-ups because visible changes may offer early signs of problems developing in the body. Although not every change indicates a serious condition, unusual or persistent differences in the tongue’s appearance should not be ignored and may require professional evaluation.

One of the changes to watch for is a noticeable change in tongue colour. A healthy tongue is generally pink, but variations such as a pale appearance may sometimes be linked to issues like iron deficiency or anaemia. On the other hand, a bright red tongue can be associated with certain vitamin deficiencies, infections, or inflammatory conditions. Experts suggest that sudden or lasting colour changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Another important sign is a change in texture or the appearance of unusual patches. A smooth tongue that appears unusually glossy may indicate nutritional deficiencies, particularly involving certain vitamins.

White patches, thick coatings, or areas that do not clear with regular cleaning may also require attention, as they can sometimes be associated with infections or other oral conditions. Dr Parekh also highlighted the importance of monitoring tongue discomfort, including pain, burning sensations, or increased sensitivity. These symptoms can occur due to several factors, including irritation from food, oral infections, nutritional issues, or other underlying health conditions. Persistent discomfort should be evaluated rather than dismissed as a temporary issue. Dryness of the tongue is another change that can provide health-related clues.

A dry mouth and tongue may occur due to dehydration, certain medications, or reduced saliva production. Since saliva plays an important role in maintaining oral health by protecting tissues and controlling bacteria, prolonged dryness can increase the risk of oral problems. The orthodontist also pointed out that changes in the tongue’s movement or the development of unusual lumps or sores should be taken seriously. While many oral changes are harmless and temporary, sores or growths that persist for an extended period may need examination by a dental professional. Maintaining good tongue hygiene is an important part of oral care. Regular cleaning of the tongue can help remove bacteria, reduce bad breath, and support overall mouth health.

However, experts caution that excessive scraping or aggressive cleaning should be avoided as it may irritate the tongue’s surface. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, adequate hydration, and regular dental check-ups can help maintain good oral health. Paying attention to small changes in the tongue can also encourage early detection of potential concerns and allow timely medical advice. Dr Parekh’s observations highlight that oral health is closely connected with overall well-being. While the tongue alone cannot diagnose health conditions, changes in its appearance can serve as useful warning signs, making regular self-checks and dental visits an important part of preventive healthcare.
