Your Cat Could Spread Ringworm: What Pet Owners Need To Know

Expert explains cat-related ringworm risks and prevention.

Veteran physician Dr Kunal Sood has highlighted the risk of ringworm infection from cats and other animals, explaining that pet owners and people who interact with stray animals should take basic precautions to prevent its spread. He said that while rescuing or caring for animals is a positive act, direct contact with infected pets can sometimes expose humans to fungal infections such as ringworm.

Dr Sood explained that despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but is a fungal infection affecting the skin and hair of both animals and humans. In a social media post, he said rescue cats and kittens are among the common sources through which people may come into contact with the infection. Cats can carry the fungus on their fur, and some infected animals may appear completely healthy while still spreading fungal spores.

The infection can spread through direct contact with an infected animal or by touching contaminated objects such as bedding, blankets, brushes and furniture. In humans, ringworm commonly appears as a red, itchy, ring-shaped rash that gradually expands over time. Experts advise that unusual skin changes, especially after contact with a new pet or stray animal, should not be ignored.

Dr Sood stressed that early identification is important because ringworm can sometimes be mistaken for other skin conditions. He warned that using steroid creams without proper diagnosis may worsen the infection. The condition is generally treatable with antifungal medicines, but treating the infected animal is equally important to prevent repeated transmission between pets and humans.

To reduce the risk of infection, Dr Sood recommended maintaining good hygiene practices, including washing hands after handling pets, cleaning frequently touched surfaces and getting animals checked by a veterinarian if signs of infection appear. He added that people do not need to avoid animals but should remain aware of possible health risks and take appropriate preventive measures while caring for pets or interacting with stray animals.
