Yogi Adityanath Says UP is Moving From Compulsion of Treatment to Healthcare Security
MBBS seats cross 13,600; CM cites wider health insurance reach.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said the state’s healthcare infrastructure has expanded significantly since 2017, with the number of medical colleges more than doubling and MBBS seats crossing 13,600. In a social media post on Friday, he highlighted the expansion of medical education facilities and government health insurance schemes, describing the state’s emerging identity as “Swastha-Saksham Uttar Pradesh”. He said the changes reflected a shift from people being compelled to seek treatment under difficult circumstances towards greater assurance of healthcare access.
According to Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh now has 85 medical colleges, providing a wider institutional base for medical education and healthcare delivery. The increase in colleges and MBBS seats is intended to expand opportunities for students pursuing medical careers while strengthening the availability of trained doctors. The figures also reflect the state government’s emphasis on increasing medical education capacity as part of its broader healthcare development agenda.
The expansion of medical colleges can help improve access to healthcare by bringing medical facilities and training institutions closer to communities. New colleges can support the development of associated hospitals, where patients may receive treatment while medical students gain clinical experience. However, the benefits depend on factors including staffing, equipment, specialist availability and the capacity of hospitals to manage patient demand.

The chief minister also pointed to the reach of government health insurance schemes, which he said had contributed to greater healthcare security for residents. Such schemes are intended to reduce the financial burden of eligible medical treatment and help families access hospital services. Their impact depends on awareness among beneficiaries, the availability of participating hospitals, coverage provisions and the ease with which patients can use the benefits.
Adityanath presented the increase in medical colleges, MBBS seats and health coverage as evidence of changes in the state’s healthcare system since 2017. Expanding medical education capacity is an important part of addressing the demand for doctors in a large and populous state. At the same time, the number of institutions and seats alone does not establish whether healthcare outcomes have improved uniformly across districts, making service quality, affordability and access important measures of progress.
The announcement places medical education and healthcare security at the centre of the Uttar Pradesh government’s development message. With 85 medical colleges and more than 13,600 MBBS seats, the state has reported a substantial expansion in training capacity compared with 2017. Further assessment of the progress would require detailed information on district-level access, hospital staffing, treatment availability and the use of government health insurance benefits.
