Worried About Neck Lumps? Doctor Explains When Thyroid Checks Matter

Doctor explains thyroid self-check steps and warning signs.

Noticing a new lump, swelling or bulge in the neck can be a reason to pay attention to thyroid health, according to physician Dr Kunal Sood. While a thyroid self-examination at home cannot diagnose a medical condition, it can help people identify visible changes early and discuss them with a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

Dr Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, shared a step-by-step guide on thyroid self-checks through an Instagram video posted on July 14. He explained that being aware of changes in one’s body can help in recognising possible abnormalities and seeking timely medical advice when required.

According to Dr Sood, a simple thyroid check can help identify signs such as enlargement, lumps, nodules or changes in the appearance of the lower neck. He noted that this awareness is particularly useful for women, who are more likely than men to experience thyroid-related disorders. However, he emphasised that self-checks are only a way to notice changes and are not a substitute for medical diagnosis.

To perform the self-examination, Dr Sood suggested standing in front of a mirror and focusing on the lower front part of the neck, just above the collarbone. The person should then slightly tilt their head backwards, take a sip of water and swallow while observing the neck area for any unusual bulges, lumps or uneven movement.

He advised repeating the process a few times to confirm whether any visible change is consistent. If a person notices a new lump, swelling or any unusual difference in the neck area, they should consult a healthcare provider for proper assessment and guidance.

Dr Sood also explained that many thyroid nodules are harmless, but some may require further medical evaluation. For people who have already been diagnosed with thyroid nodules, he recommended asking their doctor to identify the exact location so they can monitor any changes in size, shape or texture over time. Regular awareness and timely medical consultation can help ensure better thyroid health management.
