These 7 Common Mistakes Can Increase Body Heat During Summer

Experts explain habits that may increase body heat during extreme summer weather.

As India continues to face an intense summer marked by heat wave alerts across several northern and central regions, health experts are warning that certain everyday habits may unknowingly increase body heat and worsen heat-related discomfort. With daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining unusually high, the body often struggles to cool itself effectively, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, skin irritation, digestive issues, and heat stroke.

One commonly overlooked mistake is excessive consumption of ice-cold water during extreme heat. While chilled drinks may offer temporary relief, experts say very cold water can constrict blood vessels and slow the body’s natural cooling process. Instead, room-temperature water or traditionally stored “matka” water is considered more effective for hydration. Doctors also stress the importance of drinking sufficient fluids throughout the day, especially for people spending long hours outdoors.

Clothing choices and dietary habits can also significantly influence body temperature. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon tend to trap heat and reduce airflow, while tight-fitting clothes prevent the skin from breathing properly. Experts recommend wearing loose cotton or linen garments in light colours during hot weather. Similarly, heavy meals, spicy foods, and oily diets can raise metabolic heat during digestion, whereas water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon, curd, and leafy vegetables may help maintain internal cooling.

Health specialists further caution against excessive intake of caffeine and alcohol during summer months. Beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and alcohol can contribute to dehydration because of their diuretic effect, causing the body to lose essential fluids and electrolytes needed for temperature regulation. Replacing such drinks with hydrating alternatives, including coconut water, lemon water, and herbal beverages, may help reduce heat stress.

Physical activity and indoor habits are also important factors in managing body heat. High-intensity exercise during peak daytime temperatures can sharply increase body temperature and place strain on the cardiovascular system. Experts advise scheduling workouts during early mornings or evenings and reducing workout intensity during heat waves. In addition, prolonged use of ovens or stovetops can raise indoor temperatures significantly, making living spaces hotter and less comfortable.

Another frequently ignored issue is relying solely on fans in poorly ventilated rooms. Experts note that fans circulating hot air in enclosed spaces may worsen dehydration rather than cool the body effectively. Proper cross-ventilation, shaded rooms, and adequate rest are considered essential during periods of extreme heat. Medical professionals emphasise that simple lifestyle adjustments can play a major role in helping the body cope with prolonged summer temperatures and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
