Sneezing In AC Rooms? Here's Why Your Allergy Symptoms May Get Worse

AC may worsen allergy symptoms by circulating dust, pollen and mould.

Air conditioning may worsen allergy symptoms in people who are already sensitive to allergens, but the appliance itself does not directly cause allergies, paediatrician Dr Shalini Tyagi has explained. The issue becomes particularly relevant during the monsoon, when humidity and allergens can contribute to respiratory symptoms while hot weather makes staying without air conditioning difficult.

According to Dr Tyagi, allergies develop when the immune system reacts excessively to specific allergens rather than simply because of exposure to cold air. However, once allergic inflammation is present, certain non-allergic triggers can make symptoms more noticeable. Cold air, sudden drafts, exercise, smoke and pollution can contribute to symptoms in people whose airways are already sensitive.

Dr Tyagi explained that the distinction between an allergen and a trigger is important when understanding the role of air conditioning. The allergen creates the underlying susceptibility, while factors such as cold air or airflow can precipitate symptoms. Addressing the underlying allergy and reducing inflammation can therefore make people less sensitive to these additional triggers and potentially reduce the severity of their symptoms.

Air conditioning systems can also contribute indirectly if they are not maintained properly. Filters that are not cleaned regularly may collect dust, pollen and other particles before circulating them back into an indoor space. Damp areas around an AC unit can also encourage mould growth, creating another potential source of allergens for sensitive individuals.

Exposure to these particles may lead to symptoms such as sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing and throat irritation in people who are prone to allergies. This means that persistent symptoms in an air-conditioned environment may not necessarily be caused by the temperature itself, but could be linked to what is circulating through the system.

Keeping air-conditioning equipment clean and addressing dampness can therefore help reduce potential allergen exposure indoors. Dr Tyagi's explanation suggests that people with allergies do not necessarily need to avoid air conditioning altogether; instead, identifying underlying allergies and limiting environmental triggers can be important in managing recurring symptoms.
