Smriti Irani’s Drumstick Soup Recipe Helped Mira Rajput Overcome Postpartum Iron Deficiency

Mira Rajput beats anaemia using soup.

Actor Mira Rajput, who is married to Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor, has revealed that a simple iron-boosting soup recipe shared by Union Minister Smriti Irani helped her combat anaemia, crediting three months of regular consumption for a noticeable improvement in her blood reports. Mira shared the story in an Instagram Reel posted on August 30, recounting a chance meeting with the actor-turned-politician on an aeroplane, an encounter that ended up reviving a health tip she had nearly forgotten.

In her caption, Mira described the encounter in detail, writing that she met Irani on a flight and that amid wide-ranging conversations spanning coding platforms, history, and various other topics, she recalled a soup recipe Irani had shared with her previously that had helped her manage anaemia unlike anything else she had tried. She described the remedy simply as "foods that heal," emphasising that it involved no complicated diet plan or expensive health regimen, just a soup made from ingredients commonly found in any Indian kitchen. Her framing suggested that the value of the recipe lay precisely in its ordinariness, a reminder that meaningful health interventions do not always require elaborate solutions.

The recipe itself centres on masoor dal, or red lentils, combined with drumsticks, both of which are widely recognised in Indian nutritional traditions for their iron content and broader health benefits. According to versions of the recipe that have circulated publicly since Irani first shared it in 2024, the soup is prepared using one cup of red lentils, three drumsticks, one large onion, an inch of ginger, one tomato, and three to four flat beans, all cooked together in a pressure cooker with four cups of water, a tablespoon of ghee, black pepper powder, and salt to taste. The mixture is boiled for four to five whistles, then blended thoroughly and strained to produce a smooth, iron-rich broth that can be consumed on its own as a light meal or supplement.

Iron deficiency, which commonly affects women due to factors such as menstrual blood loss, pregnancy, and dietary gaps, can lead to symptoms including fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and drowsiness if left unaddressed. Iron plays a critical role in the production of red blood cells, and drumsticks in particular are valued in nutritional circles for their nutrient density, including properties linked to blood purification, alongside broader support for diabetes management, heart health, liver function, and the immune system.

While medical treatment and supplementation remain the standard clinical approach for diagnosed anaemia, natural dietary additions such as this soup are often recommended by nutritionists as complementary measures alongside iron-rich foods, particularly for those managing mild to moderate deficiency.

Irani, who serves as India's Women and Child Development Minister, had originally shared the recipe on social media in 2024, where it gained considerable attention for its simplicity, affordability, and accessibility to households across income levels. The recipe subsequently circulated widely across food and lifestyle platforms, cited repeatedly as an example of how traditional Indian kitchen staples can be repurposed for targeted nutritional benefit. Mira's endorsement, paired with her account of tangible improvement in her own blood work after three months of consistent use, has renewed public interest in the recipe well over a year after it first went viral.

The exchange between the two women has been framed by both the public and media coverage as a moment of shared wellness advice arising organically from an unplanned meeting, rather than any formal collaboration, endorsement deal, or promotional campaign. For many following the story, the appeal lies less in the celebrity connection and more in the underlying message: that consistent, simple dietary changes, sustained over time, can meaningfully support health outcomes without requiring costly interventions or drastic lifestyle overhauls.
