Scorching Japanese Summer Drives Men Toward Hair Removal For Cooler, Cleaner Skin

Japanese men embrace hair removal amid heat.

Summer has become a peak season for men’s grooming clinics in Japan, where rising demand for body hair removal is making appointments increasingly difficult to secure. As temperatures climb and humid conditions intensify discomfort, more men are turning to hair removal not only for cosmetic reasons but also in search of relief from sweat and the physical discomfort associated with body hair during the hottest months. At a men’s grooming clinic in Tokyo, 24-year-old office worker Yuki Kubo was undergoing his fourth treatment to remove hair from his legs. Wearing protective safety glasses during the procedure, Kubo said hair removal had initially been a New Year’s resolution he made with friends.

What began as a grooming goal eventually became a way of feeling more comfortable during Japan’s increasingly hot summer weather. Kubo said removing the hair had made him feel cleaner and had also reduced the discomfort caused by sweating. The smoothness of his skin was noticeable to him both in appearance and sensation, giving him another reason to continue the treatment. His experience reflects a broader shift in the reasons some Japanese men are seeking professional hair removal, with summer heat becoming an additional motivation alongside conventional grooming preferences. Gorilla Clinic, which operates 23 outlets across Japan, has traditionally seen facial hair removal as its most popular treatment among male customers.

However, Hiroyuki Ota, director of the clinic’s branch in Tokyo’s upscale Ginza district, said demand has increasingly expanded to other parts of the body. The change suggests that male grooming habits are becoming broader, with customers showing greater interest in treatments beyond facial hair. The summer season is particularly important for clinics offering these services because body hair can become more noticeable and uncomfortable in hot and humid conditions. For some customers, removing hair from areas such as the legs can make wearing summer clothing more comfortable and reduce the sensation of sweat accumulating on the skin. The trend also reflects the growing emphasis some men place on personal grooming and appearance in everyday life.

Japan has experienced increasingly challenging summer conditions in recent years, with periods of intense heat and humidity prompting people to seek different ways to stay comfortable. While hair removal is primarily a personal grooming choice, customers such as Kubo are increasingly connecting the treatment with their experience of the summer heat. For clinics, that has helped create stronger seasonal demand for treatments covering larger areas of the body. The growing interest in body hair removal also illustrates how male grooming preferences are evolving in Japan.

Treatments that were once primarily associated with facial hair are now being sought for a wider range of body areas. Clinics such as Gorilla Clinic are responding to this demand as customers increasingly view hair removal as part of their regular grooming routines rather than a treatment limited to a specific cosmetic concern. For Kubo, the decision to remove his leg hair has combined appearance, cleanliness and comfort. As Japan enters another period of intense summer heat, his experience mirrors a wider trend among men who are looking for practical and cosmetic ways to manage the effects of the season. With appointments becoming harder to secure during the summer months, body hair removal is emerging as an increasingly popular part of men’s grooming in the country.
