Resting heart rate can offer useful clues about cardiovascular fitness and how efficiently the heart is working when the body is not under physical stress. In an Instagram post shared on August 10, board-certified heart surgeon Dr Jeremy London explained why resting heart rate matters and discussed the potential benefits of having a lower rate. Resting heart rate is the number of times the heart beats per minute while a person is at rest. Dr London described it as an indicator of cardiovascular efficiency, explaining that fewer beats may be needed when the heart is able to pump blood effectively.
“Fewer beats needed to meet your body’s demands at rest = a more efficient heart,” he wrote while sharing the video. A lower resting heart rate is often associated with better cardiovascular fitness, particularly in people who exercise regularly. Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can strengthen the heart muscle and improve its ability to pump blood. As a result, the heart may not need to beat as frequently to circulate sufficient blood around the body while a person is resting.
However, resting heart rate should not be interpreted as a direct measure of how long someone will live. Longevity is influenced by numerous factors, including genetics, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diet, physical activity, smoking, sleep, stress and underlying health conditions. A person's resting heart rate can also change because of illness, dehydration, emotional stress, caffeine, certain medications and changes in fitness. For people looking to support a healthy resting heart rate, regular exercise is one of the most important lifestyle measures.

A persistently unusual resting heart rate may sometimes warrant medical attention, particularly when it is accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, chest discomfort, unusual fatigue or shortness of breath. Athletes and highly trained individuals can naturally have lower resting heart rates, while some medical conditions and medications can also affect the number.
Dr London’s comments therefore highlight the value of resting heart rate as one component of cardiovascular monitoring, rather than a standalone predictor of longevity. Looking at it alongside other heart-health indicators provides a more meaningful picture of long-term cardiovascular wellbeing.
