Recognise These Seven Symptoms Before Pancreatic Cancer Progresses, Says Specialist

Expert explains overlooked symptoms that may signal pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer often develops without obvious symptoms, making it one of the most challenging cancers to detect in its early stages. According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, the disease frequently remains unnoticed until it has reached an advanced stage. In a video shared on Instagram on July 3, the doctor highlighted seven subtle warning signs that people should not ignore, noting that the symptoms "rarely announce themselves loudly," which contributes to delayed diagnosis.

The pancreas, located behind the stomach, plays a vital role in the body by producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin that regulate blood sugar levels. When cancer develops in the organ, it can interfere with both digestion and metabolism. Because the symptoms often resemble those of less serious health conditions, many patients do not seek medical attention until the disease has progressed, reducing the chances of successful treatment.

Dr. Sethi said one of the earliest warning signs can be the sudden onset of diabetes, particularly in people over the age of 50 who have no history of the condition or significant risk factors. Another important symptom is unexplained weight loss, especially when it occurs without changes in diet or physical activity. Persistent upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, particularly after meals or while lying down, is another symptom that warrants medical evaluation.

Other signs highlighted by the gastroenterologist include jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes due to a blockage of the bile duct, and changes in stool, such as pale, greasy, or floating stools caused by poor fat digestion. He also pointed to unexplained loss of appetite, ongoing nausea, and persistent fatigue as symptoms that may indicate an underlying problem with the pancreas. While these symptoms can be associated with a variety of medical conditions, their persistence should not be ignored.

Dr. Sethi stressed that no single symptom confirms pancreatic cancer, but a combination of these warning signs—particularly when they appear together or continue for several weeks—should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis can improve treatment options, although pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms of the disease due to its tendency to be detected late. People experiencing persistent digestive issues, unexplained weight loss, new-onset diabetes, or jaundice are advised to seek timely medical evaluation rather than dismissing these symptoms as minor health concerns.

Pancreatic cancer is less common than many other cancers but is associated with a high mortality rate because it often spreads before symptoms become apparent. Health experts recommend paying close attention to unexplained changes in the body, especially among older adults and individuals with a family history of pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis. While awareness of these subtle warning signs cannot prevent the disease, recognising them early may lead to quicker diagnosis and better treatment outcomes.
