PM Modi Highlights Health Benefits And Rising Production Of Homegrown Indian Avocados

PM Modi endorses healthy Indian avocados.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again drawn attention to India's growing avocado cultivation, this time through a video posted on Instagram on September 2, in which he highlighted the fruit's rising popularity and its benefits for both consumers and farmers. In the caption accompanying the clip, Modi noted that "Indian avocados are clearly getting more popular," underscoring a broader shift in how the once little-known fruit is being perceived across the country. In the video, Modi observed that avocados were largely unfamiliar to Indian consumers in the past, with both demand and market value for the fruit remaining low for years.

Today, he said, the situation has changed considerably, with avocados now appearing regularly on dining tables across the country and gaining particular traction in health-conscious and premium food markets. The Prime Minister framed this shift as part of a broader trend in which changing consumer preferences are opening up new opportunities within India's agricultural sector. The latest video builds on remarks Modi made just days earlier during the 137th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, in which he spotlighted several farmers across southern India who have successfully diversified into avocado cultivation.

Among the examples he cited was Varadaraj, a farmer from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh who had traditionally grown tomatoes and bananas before discovering avocado cultivation after seeing the crop at a friend's farm and researching it independently online. According to Modi, Varadaraj has since produced nearly four tonnes of avocados and now supplies them directly to local shops, with the new crop, scientific guidance and direct marketing significantly transforming his farm's earnings. Modi also referenced Chandrashekharan, a farmer from Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, who took up avocado cultivation on half a hectare of land and has since seen improved prices and rising income as a result.

In addition, the Prime Minister pointed to farmers in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, who have begun planting avocados alongside their existing coffee plantations, allowing them to generate additional income alongside their traditional coffee and black pepper crops. Taken together, these examples were presented as evidence of how farmers across different regions of the country are successfully adapting to emerging consumer trends by diversifying into higher-value crops. Beyond the economic angle, Modi's remarks also touched on the nutritional value of avocados, which have gained a reputation globally as a nutrient-dense superfood rich in healthy fats, fiber and various vitamins and minerals.

The fruit's growing popularity in India mirrors trends seen in many other countries, where avocados have become a staple in health-focused diets, appearing widely in dishes ranging from toast and salads to dips and smoothies in both restaurants and home kitchens. The Prime Minister's continued emphasis on avocado cultivation appears to align with his broader messaging around agricultural diversification and farmer income growth, themes he has consistently promoted through various platforms, including Mann Ki Baat and social media, as part of efforts to encourage Indian farmers to explore new and potentially more lucrative crop options in response to shifting market demand.
