One Suspected Ebola-Like Case In Brazil Tests Negative, Officials Confirm

One suspected Ebola-like case in Brazil tests negative, reducing immediate concern.

Health authorities in Brazil have reported that one of two patients previously isolated over suspected Ebola-like symptoms has tested negative for the virus, easing initial concerns of a potential import of the disease. The patients, both recent arrivals from African countries, had been placed under medical observation after showing symptoms consistent with viral infections.

According to the São Paulo state government, a 37-year-old man who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—where an Ebola outbreak has been concentrated—was initially classified as a suspected case after presenting with fever and related symptoms. He was admitted to the Emilio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases in São Paulo for isolation and further evaluation.

Subsequent medical testing indicated that the patient was suffering from a severe form of meningitis rather than Ebola. Officials confirmed that additional diagnostic procedures are still being conducted as part of standard protocol to rule out other infectious diseases, while the patient remains under medical care.

A second patient, isolated in Rio de Janeiro after arriving from Uganda on May 22, had exhibited symptoms including cough, chills and diarrhoea. Local health officials initially treated the case as a precautionary isolation measure due to recent travel history from an outbreak-affected region.

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro confirmed that this patient tested positive for malaria, while Brazil’s Ministry of Health later stated that laboratory results showed a negative outcome for Ebola. Despite the results, the patient remains under observation until the full medical investigation is concluded.

Health officials emphasised that, although suspected cases prompted precautionary isolation procedures, the overall risk of Ebola being introduced into Brazil and the wider South American region remains very low, according to the São Paulo state health authorities.
