Hormonal balance plays an important role in several body functions, including energy levels, mood, metabolism and reproductive health. While stress, sleep patterns and lifestyle habits can influence hormonal changes, nutritionists suggest that certain nutrient-rich foods may support the body’s natural hormonal processes.
Nutritionist Lovneet Batra has highlighted seven traditional Indian foods that can be included in daily diets for their potential benefits. She noted that many commonly available kitchen ingredients contain compounds such as fibre, antioxidants, phytonutrients and anti-inflammatory properties that may help support overall wellness.
Flaxseeds are among the foods recommended for their high content of lignans and fibre, which may help support oestrogen balance and ease symptoms associated with premenstrual discomfort. Batra suggests adding freshly ground flaxseeds to foods such as roti dough, curd or smoothies as part of a balanced diet.

Methi seeds are another traditional ingredient that may support metabolic and hormonal health. They contain plant compounds known as phytoestrogens and may help improve insulin sensitivity, which is an important factor for people managing conditions such as PCOD. Soaked methi seeds are commonly consumed as part of traditional dietary practices.
Ashwagandha and shatavari, both popular Ayurvedic ingredients, are also recommended by Batra for their potential role in supporting stress management and reproductive health. Ashwagandha is associated with stress response regulation, while shatavari is traditionally used to support women’s health and hormonal wellbeing.
Sabja seeds, turmeric and amla are also included in the list for their nutritional properties. Sabja seeds provide fibre and nutrients, turmeric contains curcumin, a compound studied for its anti-inflammatory effects, and amla is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that may support overall health.
Experts emphasise that while these foods can be part of a healthy eating pattern, hormonal concerns such as thyroid disorders, PCOD, irregular periods or unexplained weight changes may require medical evaluation. A balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and professional guidance remain important components of maintaining hormonal health.
