A nutritionist and health coach has explained why skin and hair often appear to change after the age of 30, highlighting that the shift is influenced less by age alone and more by lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, nutrition, hydration, and hormonal balance. The discussion, shared by nutritionist Malvika Sahgal on social media, has drawn attention to how everyday habits can significantly impact visible signs of ageing.
According to Sahgal, changes such as reduced skin elasticity, thinner hair, increased inflammation, and slower cellular recovery are commonly observed after 30. However, she emphasises that these changes are not inevitable consequences of ageing alone but are closely linked to shifts in collagen production, nutrient absorption, and hormonal function within the body.
She further explains that protein plays a foundational role in maintaining skin and hair health, as structures like collagen and keratin are protein-based. Inadequate protein intake, she notes, can slow skin repair, weaken hair strands, and reduce collagen production. She recommends including protein-rich foods such as eggs, curd, paneer, tofu, lentils, and chickpeas in daily meals to support structural health.

The nutritionist also highlights the importance of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, iron, and folate in maintaining healthy skin and hair. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation and support scalp and skin barrier health, while vitamin C boosts collagen production and protects cells from damage. Iron and folate, she adds, are essential for hair growth and energy levels, and should ideally be paired with vitamin C-rich foods for better absorption.
In addition to diet, Sahgal stresses the critical role of sleep in maintaining overall skin and hair quality. She describes sleep as the body’s natural “beauty reset,” during which repair and regeneration occur. Insufficient rest, she warns, can lead to issues such as breakouts, puffiness, hair shedding, and elevated stress hormones, underscoring the need for 7–8 hours of consistent sleep each night.
Overall, the guidance suggests that while changes in skin and hair after 30 are common, they can be managed effectively through balanced nutrition, proper sleep, and consistent lifestyle habits that support long-term cellular health and recovery.
