Nutritionist Explains Role Of Cheat Meals In Preventing Metabolic Slowdown

Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal has explained why including a planned cheat meal in a weight-loss routine may actually support long-term fat loss instead of harming progress. In a recent Instagram post, Agarwal said sustainable weight management is built on balance and consistency rather than extreme restrictions or perfection.
According to the nutrition expert, many people approach weight loss with an “all-or-nothing” mindset by cutting out favourite foods and strictly limiting calories. However, she stressed that one indulgent meal does not determine overall fitness results. Agarwal noted that occasional flexibility in eating habits can help individuals maintain healthier routines without feeling constantly deprived.
One of the key benefits of a planned cheat meal, she explained, is its potential role in preventing metabolic slowdown. When the body remains in a calorie deficit for an extended period, hormones such as leptin — which regulate hunger and energy balance — can decline. This may lead to fatigue, increased cravings and reduced motivation. A higher-calorie meal from time to time may temporarily boost leptin levels and reduce the body’s sense of restriction.

Agarwal also highlighted the psychological advantages of allowing occasional indulgences. Strict diets often create stronger cravings because people begin to associate certain foods with guilt or failure. She said a controlled cheat meal can reduce diet fatigue, satisfy cravings in moderation and lower the risk of uncontrolled binge eating later. Her message emphasised moderation rather than abandoning dietary discipline altogether.
Another point raised by the nutritionist was the effect of highly restrictive diets on digestion. According to Agarwal, avoiding particular foods for long periods may make the digestive system more sensitive over time. Including an occasional relaxed meal can help maintain digestive flexibility without causing major disruption to overall health or fitness goals.
However, Agarwal cautioned that a cheat meal should remain limited to a single meal rather than extending into an entire “cheat day” or weekend. Multiple indulgent meals, she warned, can easily undo the calorie balance achieved during the week. Her overall advice focused on sustainability, arguing that long-term fat loss is more successful when healthy eating feels realistic and manageable rather than overly restrictive.
