Neurologist Explains Why Nightly Doomscrolling Leaves You Foggy and Forgetful
Neurologist explains how nightly doomscrolling affects sleep and memory.
Doomscrolling late at night may leave people mentally exhausted and affect their ability to concentrate the following day, according to neurologist Dr Sreelakshmi N, consultant neurologist and epileptologist at SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim. The habit involves continuously consuming a stream of online content, often switching rapidly between distressing news, social media posts and entertainment. While occasional scrolling may not necessarily be harmful, repeatedly staying on the phone before sleep can prevent the brain from getting enough time to wind down and recover.
Dr Sreelakshmi explained that excessive doomscrolling can interfere with the brain's ability to recharge. Night-time exposure to screens may affect melatonin production, a hormone involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Poor sleep can subsequently affect several aspects of cognitive functioning, including memory, decision-making and mood. People who regularly stay awake scrolling may therefore wake up feeling tired, forgetful or irritable rather than refreshed.
The type of content consumed can also contribute to the problem. Distressing or alarming updates can keep the brain alert when it should be preparing for sleep, creating a cycle in which emotional stimulation delays rest. When this happens repeatedly, inadequate sleep may contribute to mental fatigue and difficulty concentrating during the day. The constant flow of new information also gives the brain little opportunity to pause and process what has already been consumed.

The neurologist does not recommend completely eliminating digital devices or news consumption. Instead, she suggested establishing fixed periods during the day for checking news and updates rather than continuously monitoring them. Putting digital devices away at least an hour before bedtime can also help create a clearer transition between screen use and sleep. Reducing unnecessary notifications is another practical step because frequent alerts can encourage people to repeatedly open apps and resume scrolling.
People can also support better brain function by making time for adequate sleep, physical activity and face-to-face interaction. Occasional late-night scrolling is different from a persistent habit that interferes with sleep or daily functioning. If someone begins experiencing ongoing anxiety, sleep difficulties, headaches or cognitive problems that affect their routine, seeking advice from a medical professional may be appropriate.
The growing prevalence of doomscrolling highlights the importance of developing healthier digital habits, particularly at night. Rather than relying on willpower while continuously exposed to notifications and new content, setting boundaries around screen use can make it easier to disconnect. A consistent bedtime routine, reduced exposure to stimulating content and sufficient uninterrupted sleep can help the brain recover and may reduce the groggy, mentally foggy feeling that can follow repeated late-night scrolling.
