Natural hair care remedies such as mashed banana masks and chia seed gels have become increasingly popular on social media, with many influencers claiming they can reduce hair fall, nourish the scalp and promote stronger, shinier hair. While these kitchen ingredients contain nutrients that support overall health, dermatologists say their benefits for scalp and hair care are often overstated, and they should not be viewed as substitutes for evidence-based treatments. Experts explain that healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp, which depends on multiple factors including genetics, nutrition, hormonal balance, hygiene and appropriate medical care.
Although natural ingredients may improve the appearance and texture of hair temporarily, they are unlikely to treat underlying scalp disorders or reverse hair loss on their own. According to Dr. Pankhuri Dudani, Consultant in the Department of Dermatology at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, bananas contain potassium, natural sugars and antioxidants that can temporarily enhance hair softness and hydration. Their creamy texture also makes them a popular ingredient in homemade hair masks. Bananas are additionally rich in vitamin B6 and vitamin C, nutrients that contribute to overall health.
When used as a topical hair mask, mashed banana can help moisturise dry hair strands and reduce frizz, leaving hair feeling softer and smoother for a short time. However, dermatologists note that there is currently no strong scientific evidence showing that banana masks stimulate new hair growth or prevent hair loss. Their benefits are considered primarily cosmetic rather than therapeutic. Chia seeds have also gained attention as a so-called superfood for hair care because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fibre and antioxidants. Some people prepare chia seed gels for topical application, believing they can nourish the scalp and strengthen hair.

While omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in overall health and may contribute to maintaining healthy skin and hair through the diet, evidence supporting the direct application of chia seeds to the scalp remains limited. Dermatologists emphasise that hair growth is influenced by complex biological processes that cannot be significantly altered by topical food-based remedies alone. Conditions such as dandruff, fungal infections, psoriasis, eczema, hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies require proper diagnosis and targeted treatment rather than home remedies.
Maintaining good scalp health involves a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, along with appropriate hair care practices. Gentle cleansing, avoiding excessive heat styling, protecting hair from environmental damage and managing stress are all recognised as important components of healthy hair maintenance. Experts also caution that some homemade hair masks can cause irritation or allergic reactions, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin or existing scalp conditions.
Ingredients left on the scalp for prolonged periods or not rinsed thoroughly may even contribute to product buildup, potentially leading to itching or discomfort. While natural remedies like banana and chia seed masks may provide temporary hydration and improve the appearance of hair, they should be viewed as complementary cosmetic treatments rather than medical solutions. Individuals experiencing persistent hair loss, scalp irritation or other hair-related concerns are advised to consult a dermatologist to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment based on scientific evidence.
