Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Visit India From May 30, PM Modi Extends Invite

Myanmar's president arrives in India to discuss borders, connectivity, and expanding bilateral trade.

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing is set to begin a five-day official visit to India from May 30 to June 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with trade, connectivity, and border security expected to dominate bilateral discussions between the two neighboring countries. Originally scheduled to attend the International Big Cat Alliance Summit on June 1, the Myanmar leader will now undertake a broader diplomatic engagement that includes meetings with Indian officials, business representatives, and strategic stakeholders. The visit comes at a crucial time as both nations seek to strengthen ties amid regional geopolitical shifts and ongoing instability in Myanmar.

The visit will begin from Bodh Gaya, reflecting the cultural and civilisational links shared by the two countries through Buddhism. India and Myanmar share a 1,643-kilometer-long border touching Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, making bilateral cooperation on border management and security particularly significant. Analysts believe the visit carries both symbolic and strategic importance as New Delhi continues to pursue its “Neighbourhood First” and “Act East” policies while maintaining engagement with Myanmar despite political instability and international criticism following the military coup in 2021.

Experts say the relationship between India and Myanmar should not be viewed solely through the lens of China’s growing regional influence. Dr. Chhavi Vasisht of the Chintan Research Foundation said Myanmar is pursuing a balanced foreign policy approach by engaging both India and China simultaneously rather than choosing one over the other. According to her, India has maintained a pragmatic and calibrated engagement with Myanmar’s authorities while also keeping communication channels open with ethnic groups, civil society networks, and other political stakeholders operating in conflict-hit regions of the country.

Border management is expected to emerge as one of the key issues during the visit, especially amid rising concerns over cross-border movement of armed groups, weapons, and drone networks. India has already tightened the free movement regime along the border and initiated large-scale fencing and biometric monitoring measures. Security concerns intensified after Indian authorities reportedly arrested foreign nationals earlier this year for allegedly facilitating drone-related activities linked to Myanmar’s civil conflict. Officials are expected to discuss intelligence-sharing mechanisms, stronger border coordination, and measures to prevent insurgent activity along sensitive sectors in Mizoram and Manipur.

Another major focus area is likely to be the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, a strategic connectivity initiative aimed at linking India’s northeast with Myanmar through road, river, and sea transport corridors. The project includes the Sittwe Port in Myanmar and road connectivity extending to Mizoram through Paletwa and Zorinpui. India hopes the corridor will improve trade access for northeastern states while also enhancing regional integration with Southeast Asia. Despite challenges arising from conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine and Chin regions, both sides are expected to discuss assurances regarding the smooth functioning and security of the project.

Trade and economic cooperation are also expected to receive significant attention during the visit. Bilateral trade between India and Myanmar reached approximately $2.1 billion in 2024-25, with pulses remaining a key component of imports into India. Discussions may include expansion of pharmaceutical exports, agricultural machinery, renewable energy cooperation, and the rupee-kyat settlement mechanism introduced in 2024 to reduce reliance on the US dollar. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is expected to deepen multi-faceted ties between the two nations and reinforce cooperation across strategic, economic, and cultural sectors.
