Mumbai Surgeon Shares How Daily Habits Affect Sleep And Circadian Rhythm

Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon and health educator Dr Manan Vora has highlighted how common daily habits, including irregular sleep schedules, late-night meals, and lack of morning sunlight, can quietly disturb the body's natural circadian rhythm. In a recent social media video, Dr Vora explained that modern routines often push people away from their biological clock, potentially affecting sleep quality, digestion, hormones, and overall energy levels. He stressed that maintaining consistency in daily habits is key to supporting the body's internal systems.

The circadian rhythm is the body's natural 24-hour biological clock that regulates several important functions beyond sleep. According to Dr Vora, this internal timing system influences hormone production, body temperature, hunger patterns, digestion, and how the body processes food. When this rhythm is repeatedly disrupted, the effects may extend beyond tiredness and can impact various aspects of physical well-being.

Dr Vora pointed out that several everyday behaviours may interfere with the body's internal clock. These include waking up at different times each day, avoiding exposure to morning sunlight, eating dinner very late at night, and relying on quick fixes such as supplements without addressing lifestyle patterns. He explained that the body does not require a perfect routine but responds better to regularity and predictable daily schedules.

To support a healthier circadian rhythm, Dr Vora recommended following simple but consistent habits. These include waking up at the same time every day, getting sunlight within the first hour after waking, maintaining regular meal timings, reducing exposure to bright lights at night, and avoiding phone use for at least an hour before sleep. He said these small changes can help the body align better with its natural cycle.

The health expert further explained that nearly every major organ system operates according to the body's internal clock. The liver, digestive system, and brain all follow circadian patterns that influence their functioning throughout the day. By restoring regular sleep and lifestyle patterns, people may improve their body's ability to work in harmony with these natural processes.

Dr Vora concluded that addressing the root cause of lifestyle-related health issues requires focusing on daily rhythms rather than only treating symptoms. He encouraged people to prioritise consistent routines and create habits that support their biological clock. While individual health outcomes can vary, experts generally agree that regular sleep schedules, balanced meal timings, and proper exposure to natural light are important factors in maintaining overall well-being.
