Mammootty on Losing Smell And Taste: Viral Infections, Sinus Issues top Causes in India
Mammootty shares the temporary loss of smell and taste; viral causes are common.
Veteran Malayalam actor Mammootty has revealed that he temporarily lost his sense of smell and taste in 2025, shedding light on a little-known health struggle that kept him away from the screen for months. Speaking at a hearing-aid initiative in Kerala, the 74-year-old described the experience as a reminder of how easily basic human senses can be taken for granted. His disclosure has renewed public attention on anosmia and ageusia, conditions that gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Medical experts note that temporary loss of smell and taste is often linked to viral infections, particularly post-viral syndromes. While common colds and flu historically triggered such symptoms, COVID-19 significantly increased reported cases worldwide. Indian studies suggest around 14–18% of COVID-19 patients experienced new smell or taste dysfunction, lower than rates reported in Western countries. Viruses can damage the olfactory epithelium or supporting cells that enable smell perception, leading to temporary sensory disruption.
Other common causes include chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, conditions aggravated in India by high pollution and dust exposure. Inflammation in the nasal passages can block odour molecules from reaching sensory receptors. Age is another contributing factor, as the regeneration of sensory cells slows after 70. In some cases, sudden smell loss can signal neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease, though Mammootty’s case appears consistent with temporary post-illness recovery.

Doctors say most patients recover gradually with supportive care. Recommended measures include olfactory training using distinct scents, adding sour flavours to stimulate taste, correcting zinc or vitamin B12 deficiencies under medical supervision, and using saline nasal rinses to reduce inflammation. However, experts advise seeking medical evaluation if symptoms persist beyond a few weeks or occur suddenly without a clear cause, underscoring the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
