However, nutritionist Anjali Mukerjee warns that these late-night sweet cravings may indicate more than just a love for desserts. In a recent Instagram post, Mukerjee highlights that such cravings could point to a calcium deficiency or elevated stress levels, potentially contributing to serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome.
Mukerjee explains that the body often turns to sugar as a quick fix to alleviate stress, temporarily boosting mood and energy. However, this habit, if unchecked, can exacerbate India’s growing epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases. “We have metabolic syndrome, we have a lot of atherosclerosis, we have a propensity for heart disease,” she cautions in her video, emphasizing the need to address this “deeply ingrained habit” of post-meal sweets.
To break the cycle, Mukerjee advocates for gradual, sustainable changes. For those of moderate to normal weight who indulge daily, she recommends reducing dessert consumption to once a week, regardless of portion size. “If you’re in the habit of having it once a week, change this habit to having it once a fortnight,” she advises. For individuals already limiting sweets to once a month and maintaining regular exercise and healthy lifestyle habits, Mukerjee suggests continuing this disciplined approach.

For overweight individuals, Mukerjee takes a firmer stance, urging them to eliminate post-meal desserts entirely and focus on comprehensive lifestyle changes. These include regular exercise, balanced meals rich in nutrients, and adequate sleep to address underlying causes of cravings and promote overall health.
By retraining taste buds and stabilizing blood sugar through mindful eating, Mukerjee’s approach aims to curb the risks associated with frequent sugar consumption. Her practical advice offers a pathway to better health, ensuring that late-night sweet cravings don’t undermine your well-being.
