Janmashtami 2026: Krishna’s Spiritual Meaning Through Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Perspective

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar explains Krishna’s enduring spiritual significance.

Janmashtami is widely celebrated as the birth of Lord Krishna, but spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar offers a deeper interpretation of what Krishna represents in spiritual tradition. In his teaching, Krishna is associated with Ananda, or bliss, connecting the festival with joy, love and a natural state of being.

According to an article published by the Art of Living, Ravi Shankar describes Janmashtami as a celebration of the manifestation of bliss. This perspective shifts the focus beyond midnight prayers, devotional songs, temple visits and stories of Krishna’s childhood, encouraging devotees to reflect on the meaning of joy in their own lives.

Krishna’s different portrayals also contribute to this spiritual understanding. His childhood stories often depict him as playful and mischievous, while the Bhagavad Gita presents him as a guide and teacher addressing profound questions about life and duty. For devotees, these seemingly different aspects can coexist, reflecting both the joy of living and a deeper spiritual inquiry.

Ravi Shankar also gives a symbolic interpretation to the characters surrounding Krishna’s birth. In this reading, Devaki represents the body, Vasudeva represents prana or the life force, Krishna represents bliss, and Kamsa represents the ego. This interpretation offers a spiritual way of looking at the familiar story rather than presenting a historical explanation of its characters.

The idea of the ego can also be connected to everyday experiences, such as excessive pride, constant comparison with others or becoming overly focused on personal desires. From this perspective, Janmashtami can provide an opportunity to pause and reflect on whether such tendencies are affecting one’s sense of peace and happiness.

The festival can therefore remain a celebration of Krishna’s birth while also becoming a moment for personal reflection. Through prayer, devotional music, reading Krishna’s teachings or simply spending a few quiet moments in contemplation, devotees can explore the idea of Ananda. Ravi Shankar’s interpretation presents Krishna as a reminder that joy need not always be something to pursue, but something that can be recognised and experienced within.
