Iran Calls Israeli Strikes on Tehran Fuel Depots Ecocide, Warns of Generational Health Damage
Iran accuses Israel of ecocide after strikes contaminate Tehran fuel depot sites.
Iran has accused Israel of committing “ecocide” after alleged airstrikes targeted fuel depots in the Iranian capital Tehran. The accusation was made by Abbas Araghchi, who said the attacks could cause severe environmental damage and long-term health risks for local residents.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Araghchi said the bombing of fuel storage facilities violated international law and posed serious environmental threats. According to him, the destruction of such infrastructure could release harmful chemicals and pollutants into the surrounding environment, potentially affecting the soil, air, and groundwater.
The Iranian foreign minister warned that contamination from the strikes could have lasting consequences for people living in and around Tehran. He stated that residents might face long-term health problems due to exposure to toxic substances, while polluted soil and water resources could impact agriculture and drinking water for years to come.

Araghchi described the strikes as “ecocide,” a term used to describe large-scale environmental destruction that threatens ecosystems and human life. Although the term is not yet universally recognised as an international crime, environmental groups and some legal experts have pushed for it to be formally included in international law due to its potential impact on populations and natural resources.
The accusations come amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel during the ongoing conflict in the region. Both sides have exchanged threats and military actions in recent weeks, raising global concerns about a wider escalation that could affect stability across the Middle East and disrupt international energy and trade routes.
