Indian Idol Winner's Sudden Heart Stop at 43: Hidden Risks Young Stars Ignore

Indian Idol winner Prashant Tamang dies of cardiac arrest at 43 in New Delhi.

Singer and Actor Prashant Tamang, best known for winning Indian Idol Season 3, passed away on Sunday at the age of 43 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in New Delhi. According to reports, Tamang felt unwell early in the morning but delayed seeking medical attention. He was later rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead, leaving fans and the entertainment industry in shock.

Tamang had remained active professionally and recently returned from multiple work-related trips, including performances in Dubai and Arunachal Pradesh. His sister, Anupama Gurung, revealed that he had spent quality time with his family just a day before his death and appeared normal. His sudden passing underscores how cardiac events can strike without warning, even in seemingly healthy individuals.

Cardiac arrest, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), occurs when the heart abruptly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction. This instantly cuts off blood and oxygen supply to vital organs, causing loss of consciousness and, if untreated, death within minutes. Unlike a heart attack, which is caused by blocked blood flow, cardiac arrest is primarily linked to irregular heart rhythms, though heart attacks can trigger it.

Medical experts warn that the incidence of cardiac arrest among young adults is rising due to lifestyle-related factors. Sedentary routines, unhealthy diets rich in processed foods, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and substance use significantly increase cardiovascular strain. Smoking, vaping, excessive alcohol intake, and energy drink consumption further disrupt heart rhythm stability.

Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and undiagnosed genetic heart conditions also contribute to elevated risk. Conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or congenital arrhythmias often go unnoticed until a sudden collapse occurs. Long working hours, poor recovery, and ignored warning signs like fatigue or palpitations worsen the danger.

Health professionals stress that many of these risks are preventable. Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, stress management practices like yoga or meditation, adequate sleep, and routine health screenings can significantly reduce the likelihood of heart disease. Prashant Tamang’s death serves as a stark reminder that heart health awareness must begin early—long before symptoms appear.
