India Launches Fire Safety Week in Hospitals to Prevent Emergencies and Save Lives
India launches nationwide Fire Safety Week in hospitals; mock drills and training are planned to prevent emergencies.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a nationwide Fire Safety Week across hospitals, marking a major push to strengthen emergency preparedness and patient safety across India. The initiative comes amid rising concerns over fire incidents in healthcare facilities and aims to standardise safety protocols nationwide. The campaign will run from May 4 to May 10, covering all states and Union Territories.
The programme is being led by Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, who inaugurated the campaign and administered a national pledge on fire safety. Authorities have emphasised that this is not merely a symbolic effort but a practical initiative designed to improve readiness and reduce risks in hospitals, which are considered highly vulnerable during fire emergencies.
Hospitals face unique fire hazards due to oxygen-rich environments, heavy electrical usage, and the presence of immobile patients. Even small lapses can result in major disasters, disrupting critical care and endangering lives. Recent inspections in several cities have revealed serious gaps, including missing alarms, blocked emergency exits, and lack of trained personnel, highlighting the urgent need for such a nationwide intervention.

During Fire Safety Week, hospitals will conduct mock evacuation drills, staff training sessions, and infrastructure audits. Authorities will also promote awareness campaigns and ensure compliance with fire safety standards, including proper functioning of alarms, sprinklers, and evacuation systems. These measures aim to create a culture of prevention and ensure that healthcare workers are equipped to respond effectively during emergencies.
The initiative reflects a broader shift in India’s public health approach, focusing on prevention alongside treatment. By strengthening safety systems and improving awareness, the government aims to reduce avoidable tragedies in hospitals. Fire Safety Week is expected to not only enhance institutional readiness but also reassure patients and families that healthcare facilities are becoming safer and more resilient.
