High Kiwi Prices in India: Dietician Suggests Amla, Jamun and Guava Instead

Gurugram dietician suggests affordable fruits over costly kiwi.

As kiwi prices surge across Indian markets, nutrition experts are advising consumers to shift toward locally available seasonal fruits, emphasising that balanced nutrition can be achieved without relying on expensive imported produce. The issue has gained attention as kiwi, often promoted as a “superfruit” due to its vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidant content, has become increasingly expensive and inconsistent in availability.

In several retail markets, prices have reportedly reached around ₹60 per piece, making it difficult for many households to include the fruit regularly in their diets. Health experts, however, stress that no single fruit is essential for good health. Speaking on the issue, Sandhya Pandey, General Manager and Chief Dietician at Medanta, Gurugram, said that while kiwi does offer valuable nutrients, its popularity should not overshadow the wide range of affordable fruits available in India.

She explained that nutritional well-being depends on diversity in food choices rather than dependence on one imported item marketed as a superfood. Pandey noted that dietary diversity ensures a broader intake of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. She added that instead of searching for a direct replacement for kiwi, consumers should focus on incorporating a variety of seasonal and regional fruits into their daily diet, which collectively provide similar or even superior nutritional benefits.

She highlighted that India’s seasonal fruit availability is both extensive and region-specific, making it easier for consumers to maintain a healthy diet without high costs. Fruits such as amla, guava, citrus fruits, papaya, pineapple, mango, jamun, ber, litchi, jackfruit, sapota, and locally grown berries are widely available at different times of the year and offer a rich nutritional profile.

According to Pandey, these fruits provide essential nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, dietary fibre, potassium, and a range of antioxidants that support immunity, digestion, and overall health. She also pointed out that fruits harvested in their natural season are typically fresher, more flavourful, and more affordable, making them a practical alternative to imported produce. The dietician further explained that regional availability plays a key role in maintaining both affordability and freshness.

In northern India, fruits like amla, guava, kinnow, ber, and litchi are commonly accessible, while southern regions offer bananas, papaya, pineapple, jackfruit, and sapota in abundance. This geographical diversity ensures that people across the country can access nutrient-rich fruits without depending on imported options. Pandey also highlighted that imported fruits like kiwi often travel long distances, which can impact both cost and freshness due to storage and transportation requirements.

In contrast, locally sourced fruits typically retain more nutrients and are easier on the household budget. Experts suggest that shifting dietary focus toward local and seasonal produce not only reduces financial strain but also supports sustainable eating habits. By embracing India’s wide range of indigenous fruits, consumers can maintain balanced nutrition while avoiding the premium pricing associated with imported “superfoods” like kiwi.
