Former UK Prince Andrew Released Hours After Detention in Epstein Probe
Prince Andrew was released hours after being held in connection with an Epstein-related misconduct investigation.
Former British royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, also known previously as Prince Andrew, was released Thursday evening after being held in police custody for more than 10 hours in connection with an ongoing investigation linked to revelations from the Jeffrey Epstein Files. He was arrested earlier in the day on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to British authorities.
The Thames Valley Police confirmed that the 66-year-old was detained at his home near Sandringham Estate in eastern England as officers carried out searches of properties in Norfolk and Berkshire. Photographs showed Mountbatten-Windsor leaving the Norfolk police station in the evening after questioning, but police did not formally name him in their statement, in line with standard UK procedure.
Mountbatten-Windsor was released “under investigation,” meaning he has not been charged and is neither formally accused nor cleared of any wrongdoing as inquiries continue. The release under investigation allows police to continue their work while no bail conditions have been imposed.

The arrest comes amid intensified scrutiny following the release of millions of pages of U.S. Department of Justice documents tied to Epstein, a U.S. financier and convicted sex offender. Allegations being examined include whether Mountbatten-Windsor unlawfully shared confidential government reports with Epstein during his earlier tenure as a UK trade envoy — conduct that could constitute misconduct in public office.
King Charles III, Mountbatten-Windsor’s elder brother, issued a public statement stressing that “the law must take its course” and expressing full support and cooperation with the investigation, as the monarchy sought to balance institutional stability with the legal process.
The arrest and subsequent release mark an unprecedented legal episode involving a senior member of the British royal family in modern times, underscoring the enduring fallout from Epstein’s network and the global debate over accountability for powerful individuals tied to his case.
