Food Pharmer's Iodine Trick Reveals If Your Ghee Contains Hidden Starch

With rising concerns over food adulteration, Food Pharmer has shared a simple and effective method to check the purity of desi ghee at home. In a recent video, he demonstrated an iodine-based test that can reveal whether ghee has been mixed with starch-based adulterants such as potatoes. The method is easy to perform and does not require any specialised equipment.
The test is based on guidelines mentioned in the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) official testing manual. To conduct it, a small quantity of ghee is placed in a bowl and a few drops of iodine solution are added. If the ghee turns blue, it indicates the presence of starch, pointing towards adulteration.
Explaining the results, Food Pharmer said that a colour change confirms the product is not genuine. “If it turns blue, understand that you are eating adulterated starch in the name of ghee,” he stated. On the other hand, if there is no colour change, the ghee is likely to be pure and safe for consumption.

He highlighted that ghee is especially vulnerable to adulteration due to its high price and widespread use in Indian households. According to him, adding starch is a cheap and easy way to increase volume and boost profits, making consumers unknowingly pay more for an inferior product.
Urging people to stay alert, Food Pharmer advised consumers not to rely solely on packaging and marketing claims. “Don’t just read the label, read the report too,” he said, stressing the importance of awareness and accountability. His warning comes amid frequent reports of fake ghee manufacturing units being busted across India, raising serious concerns about public health and food safety.
