Food Authority Shares Four Tips To Keep Packed Lunch Safe And Hygienic

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued fresh guidance on safe food handling practices, sharing simple tips to help consumers keep packed lunches hygienic and safe for consumption. The advisory comes as part of the regulator’s ongoing efforts to improve public awareness around food safety, especially in everyday habits like home meal preparation and storage.

Taking to social media platform X, FSSAI emphasised the importance of not just cooking nutritious meals but also packing them safely. In its message, the authority urged people to “pack smart, eat safe” and highlighted four key practices that can help maintain hygiene. These included washing, cleaning, and thoroughly drying lunch boxes before use, which helps prevent bacterial growth and contamination.

FSSAI also recommended using food-grade containers made of safe materials such as steel, glass, or certified food-grade plastic. The regulator stressed that containers should have tightly fitting lids to prevent leakage and external contamination. Additionally, it advised consumers to allow cooked food to cool properly before packing, as sealing hot food can increase moisture buildup and lead to faster spoilage.

The advisory is part of FSSAI’s broader campaign to strengthen food safety awareness across India. In recent months, the authority has been actively issuing warnings and guidelines related to food packaging practices, labeling standards, and the risks of unsafe materials. These efforts aim to ensure that consumers make informed choices and adopt safer habits in daily food consumption.

Earlier, FSSAI, along with local civic bodies, had also conducted inspections targeting unsafe packaging practices among street vendors. Officials have repeatedly warned against the use of newspapers for wrapping food, citing the presence of harmful chemicals and heavy metals in printing ink that may pose health risks when consumed indirectly.

Through such continued advisories and enforcement measures, FSSAI is reinforcing its focus on public health protection by encouraging safe packaging, hygienic handling, and greater awareness about food safety standards across both household and commercial food practices.
