Experts Explain Health Effects of Keerthy Suresh’s 41 Hours Without Sleep

Experts explain serious health risks of prolonged sleep deprivation.

National Award-winning actor Keerthy Suresh has revealed that she remained awake for 41 consecutive hours while managing back-to-back film shoots across multiple industries. Sharing the experience on Instagram, she said her demanding schedule included workdays lasting nearly 20 hours, with only about an hour available to recover between assignments.

Her disclosure has renewed discussion about the health effects of prolonged sleep deprivation. Remaining awake for an extended period can affect concentration, judgement, reaction time and decision-making, making it difficult for a person to function safely and efficiently even when they believe they are still capable of continuing their work.

Another concern associated with severe sleep loss is the possibility of microsleeps, brief and involuntary episodes in which the brain temporarily enters a sleep-like state. These episodes can occur without warning and may be particularly dangerous while driving, operating equipment or performing work that requires sustained attention and precise coordination.

Prolonged wakefulness can also disrupt the body’s normal biological processes. Sleep plays an important role in regulating hormones, supporting the immune system, processing memories and allowing the body to recover. When adequate rest is repeatedly delayed, the resulting strain may affect both physical health and emotional stability.

Extended or recurring sleep deprivation may also place pressure on cardiovascular and metabolic health. Although the impact can vary depending on the individual and the duration of sleep loss, specialists generally caution that lost sleep cannot always be fully corrected by relying on a single extended rest period after several demanding workdays.

Keerthy’s experience reflects a wider problem faced by professionals working long or irregular shifts, including doctors, emergency responders, corporate employees and film crews. Her disclosure highlights the importance of adequate recovery time and structured work schedules, as prolonged wakefulness involves more than temporary tiredness and can create serious safety and health risks.
