Nutritionists and medical experts are weighing in on the growing popularity of chia seeds and sabja (sweet basil) seeds as dietary aids for weight loss, noting that both ingredients can support satiety and digestion when consumed correctly and in moderation.

Chia seeds and sabja seeds are both plant-based, fibre-rich foods that expand when soaked in water, forming a gel-like texture that promotes a feeling of fullness. Nutritionally, chia seeds are known for higher protein content and omega-3 fatty acids, while sabja seeds are typically lower in calories and richer in soluble fibre, with an added cooling effect on the body.

Chia seeds are often highlighted for their potential role in long-term weight management. They help slow digestion, reduce hunger cravings due to their protein and fibre content, and keep individuals feeling full for longer periods. These properties make them a common addition to smoothies, oats, and other meals aimed at supporting sustained energy and appetite control.

However, experts also caution against overconsumption. Excess intake of either seed may lead to bloating or digestive discomfort, particularly in sensitive individuals. Chia seeds are generally recommended after proper soaking to avoid digestive issues, while sabja seeds should also be consumed in moderation. Both are best used as part of a balanced diet rather than as standalone weight-loss solutions.
