Easy Bruising Concerns? Expert Shares Ways To Protect Sensitive Skin

Dermatologist explains bruising causes and prevention.

Unexplained bruises appearing on the skin without any clear injury may seem harmless, but dermatologists say frequent or unusual bruising can sometimes indicate underlying health issues. Dr Rashmi Sharma, consultant dermatologist at Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, explained that some people naturally bruise more easily due to factors such as skin sensitivity, ageing, nutritional deficiencies, medication use, or certain medical conditions.

According to Dr Sharma, bruising occurs when small blood vessels or capillaries beneath the skin break due to minor impact, allowing blood to leak into surrounding tissues. This trapped blood appears as a reddish, purple, or blue mark on the skin. While occasional bruises are common and often caused by unnoticed bumps or minor injuries, repeated bruising without an obvious cause may require medical attention.

The dermatologist highlighted several reasons why some individuals may develop bruises more easily than others. Ageing is one factor, as skin becomes thinner over time and blood vessels become more fragile. Certain medications, including blood thinners, aspirin, corticosteroids, and supplements such as fish oil or ginkgo, can also increase the likelihood of bruising by affecting blood clotting or weakening blood vessel structure.

Nutritional deficiencies may also contribute to frequent bruising. Dr Sharma said low levels of vitamin C, vitamin K, or iron can affect blood vessel strength and the body’s ability to form clots effectively. In some cases, easy bruising may be associated with health conditions such as liver disease, bleeding disorders, or abnormalities related to platelets, making proper evaluation important.

To reduce the chances of developing severe bruises, Dr Sharma recommended maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, especially vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron. She also advised people who experience frequent bruising to discuss their medications and supplements with healthcare providers. Protecting the skin during activities that may involve injury by wearing suitable clothing can also help reduce the risk.

Dr Sharma advised people to seek medical advice if bruises are unusually large, painful, appear without any known injury, or occur along with symptoms such as frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums. A family history of bleeding disorders should also be considered a reason for medical consultation. Early assessment, she said, can help identify treatable conditions and provide reassurance when bruising is not linked to a serious issue.
