Dr Saurabh Sethi Reveals Four Health Benefits Of Drinking Morning Coffee Regularly

Morning coffee may offer health benefits

Starting the day with a cup of coffee may offer several health benefits when consumed in moderation, according to gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi. The California-based doctor, who has trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, said regular morning coffee consumption may support liver health and overall well-being, while sharing four reasons why people may not need to avoid the beverage. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks worldwide, with millions of people relying on it as part of their morning routine.

For many, the beverage provides an energy boost and helps improve alertness at the beginning of the day. However, questions have often been raised about whether daily coffee consumption is beneficial or harmful to long-term health. In a post shared on Instagram on July 31, Dr Sethi discussed the relationship between coffee consumption and health, particularly liver function. Drawing from his experience of reviewing more than 10,000 liver scans over a medical career spanning more than two decades, he said evidence suggests that moderate coffee intake can be associated with positive effects on liver health.

One of the key reasons Dr Sethi highlighted was coffee’s potential role in supporting liver protection. Studies have suggested that coffee consumption may be linked with a lower risk of certain liver conditions, including fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis. Researchers believe compounds found in coffee, including antioxidants and other bioactive substances, may contribute to these protective effects. Dr Sethi also pointed to coffee’s antioxidant properties as another possible benefit.  Coffee contains naturally occurring compounds that may help reduce oxidative stress in the body.

Oxidative stress is associated with cellular damage and inflammation, and antioxidants are believed to play a role in maintaining overall health. Another benefit associated with coffee is its potential impact on metabolism and energy levels. Caffeine, the primary active compound in coffee, can temporarily improve alertness, concentration, and physical performance. For many individuals, a morning cup of coffee helps them feel more focused and productive during the day.

Dr Sethi further noted that coffee consumption has been studied for its association with a reduced risk of certain chronic health conditions. However, he emphasised that the benefits depend on factors such as quantity consumed, individual health conditions, and overall lifestyle habits. Excessive coffee intake can lead to side effects, including sleep disturbances, increased anxiety, and digestive discomfort in some people. Health experts generally recommend moderation when consuming caffeinated beverages. While coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle for many individuals, it should not replace balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and other essential health practices.

The impact of coffee can also vary from person to person. People with certain medical conditions, caffeine sensitivity, or specific dietary restrictions may need to adjust their intake after consulting healthcare professionals. Dr Sethi’s comments add to the growing body of research examining coffee’s relationship with health. While coffee is not a cure-all beverage, existing evidence suggests that moderate consumption may provide benefits, particularly for liver health, when combined with healthy lifestyle choices. For regular coffee drinkers, a morning cup may be more than just a daily ritual — it could also contribute positively to overall wellness.
