Neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar has highlighted the possible impact of excessive doomscrolling and prolonged exposure to short-form digital content on memory, attention span, and overall cognitive function. He warned that constantly consuming quick, fragmented information through platforms featuring endless reels and short videos may influence how the brain processes information and maintains focus. Doomscrolling, a term commonly used to describe the habit of continuously scrolling through online content for extended periods, has become increasingly common with the rise of short-form video platforms.
Many users often open social media apps intending to spend only a few minutes but end up spending hours consuming a continuous stream of content. Dr Kumar noted that this pattern can become addictive because these platforms are designed to encourage repeated engagement.
