Doctors Explain Biological Reasons Lassi Makes You Feel Sleepy

Doctors explain why lassi causes drowsiness due to digestion.

A glass of thick lassi, a popular North Indian summer drink, may cause feelings of drowsiness in some people due to a combination of dietary, metabolic and digestive factors, according to medical experts. While lassi is widely valued for its cooling and hydrating properties, doctors say its composition can sometimes trigger a mild sedative-like effect after consumption.

Medical specialists explain that dairy-based beverages like lassi contain tryptophan, an amino acid that supports the production of serotonin and melatonin. These brain chemicals are associated with relaxation and sleep regulation. As a result, consuming lassi—especially in larger quantities—may naturally contribute to a calming effect that can make some individuals feel sleepy after drinking it.

Nutrition experts also point out that lassi’s thickness, sugar content and caloric density can make it relatively heavy to digest. A dietitian noted that curd used in lassi provides not only tryptophan but also micronutrients such as magnesium and zinc, which are involved in melatonin production. In addition, fermentation in curd may influence gut bacteria in ways that support serotonin production, indirectly affecting sleep patterns.

Doctors further explain that the feeling of sluggishness is often linked to digestion itself. Thick or sweet lassi consumed after a heavy meal can intensify post-meal fatigue due to the body’s increased digestive workload. In some cases, this “rest and digest” response may also contribute to a sense of lethargy, and for individuals prone to acidity or reflux, it may even affect breathing comfort and increase post-meal tiredness.

Experts emphasize that not everyone experiences drowsiness after drinking lassi. The response varies based on factors such as quantity consumed, sugar levels, individual metabolism, and overall health conditions. Larger servings or highly sweetened versions are more likely to produce a sleepy feeling, while lighter preparations may not have the same effect.

Doctors advise moderation rather than avoidance for those who feel drowsy after lassi. Choosing unsweetened or thinner versions, avoiding late-evening consumption, and adjusting portion sizes can help reduce sleepiness while still benefiting from its hydration and digestive advantages. They add that mindful consumption is key to balancing its nutritional benefits with its potential calming effects.
