Doctor Warns Simple Habits Can Significantly Reduce Kidney Disorder Risk

Doctor outlines habits and hydration for kidney protection.

Kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering toxins, regulating fluid balance, maintaining blood pressure, and ensuring proper mineral composition in the body. Speaking in an advisory context, Dr Shelly Mahajan, pathologist and lab director at Mahajan Imaging & Labs, emphasized that the kidneys act as the body’s natural detoxification system. She explained that their role in sustaining overall health is often underestimated until problems begin to develop. According to her, maintaining kidney health requires consistent attention to everyday lifestyle choices.

Dr Mahajan noted that kidney-related illnesses are increasingly being observed in India, often progressing silently in the early stages without obvious symptoms. She identified key contributing factors such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and lack of physical activity as major drivers of chronic kidney disease. These conditions, she explained, can gradually impair kidney function over time, making early detection difficult. As a result, many individuals become aware of the condition only after significant damage has already occurred.

Highlighting preventive care, the doctor stressed the importance of balanced hydration as a simple but effective measure. She advised that drinking adequate water helps the kidneys efficiently filter toxins and may reduce the risk of kidney stone formation. However, she also cautioned against excessive intake of sugary beverages such as soft drinks, energy drinks, and packaged juices, which may contribute to obesity and diabetes. In India’s hot climate, she added, individuals with outdoor or physically demanding routines must remain particularly mindful of their daily fluid intake.

Addressing chronic disease management, Dr Mahajan underlined that controlling diabetes and high blood pressure is essential for protecting kidney function. Elevated blood sugar can damage small blood vessels responsible for waste filtration, while high blood pressure places additional strain on kidney structures. She recommended maintaining regular physical activity, following a balanced diet, limiting processed foods and salt, and maintaining a healthy body weight. These steps, she said, support both kidney health and overall well-being.

The expert also warned against the frequent or unsupervised use of over-the-counter painkillers, which may negatively affect kidney function when used excessively or for prolonged periods. She added that certain herbal supplements and alternative remedies could also place additional strain on the kidneys if not used cautiously. Finally, Dr Mahajan emphasized the importance of routine screening through urine and blood tests, which can detect early signs of kidney damage before symptoms appear. Imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scans may also be used when necessary to identify structural abnormalities.
