Doctor Shares 7 Tips To Fall Asleep Quickly During Summer Nights

Doctor shares seven practical tips to improve sleep in summer.

Difficulty sleeping during hot summer nights is a common problem, with rising temperatures often disrupting the body’s natural sleep cycle. A doctor has shared seven practical hacks that can help individuals fall asleep faster and improve sleep quality, even during periods of intense heat.

One of the most effective strategies is to keep the bedroom cool and well-ventilated. Using fans, air conditioning, or keeping windows open during cooler hours can significantly lower room temperature. Experts also recommend using light, breathable bedding made of cotton to reduce heat retention and allow better airflow.

Hydration plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps prevent overheating at night, though heavy fluid intake right before bed should be avoided to minimise sleep disruptions. Taking a lukewarm shower before bedtime can also help bring down body temperature and signal the body that it is time to sleep.

Another key tip is to limit screen time before bed. Exposure to blue light from phones and laptops can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. Instead, individuals are encouraged to adopt a calming pre-sleep routine, such as reading or listening to soft music.

Dietary habits can also influence sleep quality. Avoiding heavy meals, caffeine, and spicy foods close to bedtime can prevent discomfort and restlessness. Light, easily digestible dinners are more conducive to uninterrupted sleep, particularly in hot weather.

Clothing choices matter as well. Wearing loose, breathable sleepwear helps the body stay cool and reduces sweating during the night. Additionally, keeping feet cool—such as by washing them with cold water—can help lower overall body temperature and promote relaxation.

Finally, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is essential. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate the body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep even in less-than-ideal conditions. Together, these simple lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve sleep quality during the summer months.
