Everyday habits—from the shoes you wear to how often you move—play a crucial role in determining long-term joint health, according to insights shared by pain specialist Dr Kunal Sood. The expert highlights that joint function is not only shaped by injuries or intense workouts but also by routine behaviors that influence how the body absorbs and distributes physical stress over time.
Dr Sood emphasises that proper warm-ups before exercise are essential for protecting joints. Warming up increases blood flow, improves flexibility, and enhances the lubrication of joints by making synovial fluid less viscous. This process allows muscles to absorb force more efficiently, reducing strain on cartilage, ligaments, and tendons while improving overall movement coordination.
He also warns against what he calls “weekend overload,” where individuals engage in intense physical activity after long periods of inactivity. Such sudden spikes in exertion can increase the risk of injury, as fatigued muscles fail to adequately support joints. This shifts stress to passive structures like cartilage and ligaments, potentially leading to strain and microdamage over time.

In addition to movement habits, Dr Sood notes that certain supplements may help manage joint discomfort. Ingredients such as collagen, omega-3 fatty acids, and turmeric may support cartilage metabolism and reduce inflammation. However, he cautions that these should not be seen as substitutes for proper physical activity and load management, as they do not directly rebuild joint structures.
Another key concern is prolonged sitting, which can lead to stiffness and reduced joint function. Extended inactivity limits the circulation of synovial fluid, depriving cartilage of necessary nutrients, while weakening stabilising muscles such as the core and glutes. This imbalance places additional stress on joints during movement, increasing the likelihood of discomfort.
Finally, the doctor underscores the importance of footwear in maintaining joint health. Worn-out or unsupportive shoes can alter how force is transmitted through the body, increasing impact on the feet, knees, and hips. Over time, poor footwear choices can contribute to joint strain, highlighting the need for proper support and timely replacement of shoes to maintain healthy joint mechanics.
