Dermatologist’s Guide: How To Use Retinol Safely For Best Skin Results
Dr Gagan Raina reveals the right way to use retinol without irritation for lifelong glowing skin.
Retinol is hailed as the gold standard for anti-ageing and skin renewal, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skincare. Derived from Vitamin A, retinol works at a cellular level to boost collagen, enhance cell turnover, and restore youthful radiance, explained Dr. Gagan Raina, Medical & Clinical Director at Arisia Skin Clinic. Its power lies not in strength but in consistent, thoughtful use.
Dr. Raina advises starting retinol in your mid-20s with low concentrations (0.1% to 0.3%) applied once or twice weekly to build tolerance. Users in their 30s can move to 0.5% every alternate night to tackle fine lines and uneven tone, while those in their 40s and above may use up to 0.75% two to three times weekly for repair and elasticity. Overuse or starting with high strength often causes irritation, so gradual introduction and patience are key.
For maximum efficacy, retinol should be applied only at night on thoroughly dry skin, using a pea-sized amount. Dr. Raina recommends the "sandwich method": moisturiser first, then retinol, followed by another moisturiser layer to buffer sensitivity. Sunscreen use is mandatory during the day due to increased photosensitivity. Pairing retinol with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide helps maintain skin barrier health, while exfoliating acids and high-strength Vitamin C should never be used simultaneously.

Choosing the right formulation depends on skin type: creams and oils are ideal for dry or mature skin, serums suit normal or combination skin, and gels or emulsions work best for oily or acne-prone skin. Dr. Raina stresses that product stability and quality often override concentration, so a well-formulated 0.3% retinol can outperform unstable stronger versions.
Lastly, lifestyle factors including sleep quality, sun protection, diet, and hydration significantly influence retinol’s effectiveness. Visible improvements typically appear after 8 to 12 weeks, with smoother texture and stronger, more resilient skin emerging. Dr. Raina sums it up: “Retinol is not a miracle, it’s a method. Used wisely and patiently, it becomes a lifelong partner for skin health and glow.”
